ASHM - Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (National)
The Australasian Society of HIV Medicine (ASHM) was incorporated in 1990
to represent medical practitioners working in the HIV
sector. Over time ASHM has broadened its membership to
include health care workers and other graduates working
in the HIV sector.
The Society is a key partner in the Australian response to HIV, hepatitis
and related diseases. It works closely with government,
advisory bodies, community agencies and other professional
organizations. The Society conducts a broad Education
Program in HIV and viral hepatitis for medical practitioners,
health care providers and allied health workers and manages
a program of continuing medical education in HIV and viral
hepatitis.
The Society is governed by an elected voluntary board and managed by a
select staff. The Society receives support from the Commonwealth
Department of Health & Ageing, State and Territory
Departments of Health and the pharmaceutical industry.
The Society convenes standing committees on a range of
issues affecting its members including education, HIV
treatment, viral hepatitis, international/development
issues and professional affairs.
ASHM provides a number of distinct but interrelated services within the
health industry in Australia, New Zealand and neighbouring
countries:
- Provision
of health and medical/scientific information on HIV
and related conditions.
- Provision
of education and training about HIV and related conditions.
- Development
and advocacy of policy on clinical practice, professional
affairs and public policy issues about HIV and related
conditions.
