Positive Women Victoria (VIC)
Positive Women began with the meeting of two isolated women with HIV early in the epidemic. They quickly realised that their needs differed from the predominantly gay male HIV positive community. Overcoming many obstacles the women formed Positive Women in 1988. We offered informal support and information to newly diagnosed women and pushed for greater attention to women's needs in the health system.
Originally based at Fairfield Hospital. Positive Women now has office space at the Alfred Hospital. We received funding for a paid worker in 1994. We are a contact point for women with HIV/AIDS, and our membership includes a third of all positive women state-wide. In mid 1997 there were approximately 180 HIV positive women in Victoria.
