Vision, Mission and Objectives

DEFGLIS is an organisation of Regular, Reserve and Civilian members of the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex and transgender (GLBIT) and allies.

VISION

DEFGLIS's Vision is of an ADO culture which provides a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where diversity is valued and people are empowered to be authentic about themselves in the workplace, without fear of loss of opportunity, thus allowing them full realisation of their potential and equal participation in all aspects of military life.

MISSION

DEFGLIS's mission is to foster an inclusive and supportive atmosphere within the ADO for GLBIT members.

OBJECTIVES

  • To promote understanding of ADO personnel policy and practice of recruiting, training, and developing the best qualified individuals, without regard to their sexual orientation, and to work towards the ADO’s goal of becoming an Employer of Choice.
  • To encourage and assist the ADO in its efforts to enhance its public image among the GLBIT community.
  • To provide a mechanism for networking, socialising, and communication among ADO active or retired GLBIT members and allies (including civilian Defence employees and contract staff).
  • To endeavour toward a safe work environment, free from all forms of harassment.
  • To promote understanding of the workplace-related concerns and sensitivities of GLB people in the ADO.
  • To advocate for diversity awareness training - specific to sexual orientation issues for all ADO members and conducted by qualified, sensitive trainers.
  • To advocate for the value of diversity within the ADO workforce.
