Flight Lieutenant Joseph Monteith had a career in clinical pharmacy, public policy and cancer therapeutics research prior to joining the military. He has degrees in pharmacy, molecular biology, child health, medicine, public health and health management. Joe was appointed in the Royal Australian Air Force in February 2012 through the Graduate Medical Scheme. He graduated from medicine with distinction the University of Melbourne in 2014 and was awarded the Dean’s Prize as the highest achieving all-round medical graduate. He subsequently commenced clinical practice focusing on critical care and paediatrics within hospitals throughout Victoria and New South Wales, prior to posting to No. 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron in 2017. Joe completed Officer Training School that year and was the first openly gay military officer to graduate as Dux of an officer training establishment. 

Joe has been posted to RAAF Base Richmond and RAAF Base Amberley, working within expeditionary health as an Aviation Medical Officer and GP. He is soon joining Headquarters Health Services Wing within governance and assurance for Air Force Health. Joe has deployed to the Middle East as part of OP ACCORDION in 2018-2019 and has supported numerous tasks around Australia, South East Asia and the South West Pacific. He is the inaugural No. 35 Squadron AVMO and continues this work to support the C-27J Spartan.

Joe was appointed to the Board of Directors of DEFGLIS in 2017 and was elected as Vice-President in 2019. He has over 10 years of experience in organisational governance across public and private sectors, within Australia and overseas.
