Mission refocus for BOMSupport

2014-05-02-tiffanysharp

BOMSupport recently revised their mission to clarify that support will be provided to same-sex Defence partners and families in the event of relationship breakdown.

The organisation provides support and information resources to aid partners and families transition to civilian single life, but also seeks to prevent breakdown of relationship through research, education and awareness.

"We are well underway working collaboratively with research foundations and ex-service organisations (ESO) on domestic issues facing ADF families," said Ms Tiffany Sharp, director of BOMSupport.

When a breakdown of a Defence relationship occurs, partners can be left without access to the support that they would normally have had access to as the partner of a Defence member.

BOMSupport advocacy and close working relationship with ESO's has led to recognition of former partners as part of the veteran community in South Australia. The change in the veteran's charter is an important milestone which helps to ensure that former partners remain part of the broader Defence community and can access support services.

Sharp indicated that research conducted to date indicates that a greater focus on prevention of suicide and homicide is required, but these topics are taboo subjects in various circles.

"Increasing awareness for the need preventative frameworks for suicide and homicide in the event of relationship breakdown along with providing basic services to former families facing health and welfare issues are a priority for the organisation," said Sharp. "The important component is to ensure one does not feel alone as 'we are all in this together.' "
