DEFGLIS leadership wins individual achievement awards

2014-05-00-ChongAwardDEFGLIS President Squadron Leaader Vince Chong and South Australia co-ordinator Flight Sergeant Ned Kelly were recently recognised for individual achievement at the prestigous Pride in Diversity 2014 Australian Workplace Equality Index Awards.

Chong was awarded LGBTI Inclusion Champion 2014 and Kelly was awarded Regional Champion for LGBTI Inclusion 2014. They competed against many worthy candidates across the private and public sectors. The awards were presented by former Australian Supreme Court Justice The Hon. Michael Kirby and Group Captain Cate McGregor, the most senior trangender person serving in Defence.

2014-05-00-KellyAwardGoldman Sachs was been named Australia’s Employer of the Year for 2014 at the special event earlier this year recognising workplace support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. The Australian Federal Police were the top ranked organisation from the public sector, and came sixth overall. The Australian Defence Force achieved Bronze Award Status recognising improving LGBTI inclusion practice.

Pride in Diversity Director Dawn Hough says more organisations are engaging with AWEI. “This is the fourth year of the AWEI. The number of employers participating has increased by 83% from Year 1 and we now have over 5650 employees participating in the employee survey.  The focus on LGBTI inclusion initiatives has increased substantially.  Organisations outside of the Top 20 are completing submissions showing a depth of work comparable to Top 10 organisations a couple of year ago.  Australian employers are taking their work in this area very seriously.  LGBTI inclusion within Australian workplaces is on the rise and is fast becoming a differentiator in the workplace diversity agenda.”
