Canberra Celebrates Same Sex Love

Fruitful Loveʻ... fortunate is a human being, straight or gay, who has such lifelong love.ʼ  The Honourable Michael Kirby AC, CGM

On Friday 21st September, LEUT Jennifer Macklin (RANR) represented the Australian Defence Force and DEFGLIS in the highly prestigious event, 'Fruitful Love' held at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. The event included many well known Canberra artists and high profile participants such as Michael Kirby, Andrew Barr and Robyn Archer.

Macklin delivered a reading of a letter titled 'Dear Dave' written by a gay US serviceman to his partner during the second world war. It was a moving love letter penned on the occasion of their anniversary. The letter was used as part of a campaign "Stories from the Frontlines: Letters to President Barack Obama” launched to underscore the urgent need for congressional action and presidential leadership in the struggle to repeal the“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the United States military. The letter can be found here: http://www.sldn.org/blog/archives/stories-from-the-frontlines-a-love-letter-from-a-soldier/

The event sought to celebrate love in all its forms, and acknowledge that love contributes to an economically thriving, nourishing and nurturing society. The event examined same sex relationships from the perspective of artists and distilled the truth about the human soul’s fundamental search for love and companionship.

The performance of literature and music drew attention to the warmth and humour of relationships.  Focussing on same sex relationships, Fruitful Love, suggests that where ever there is human presence, there will always be a place for intimacy and tenderness, be it at the dining table or on the battlefield.  Performing this collage of music and word was a mix of Canberra’s finest performers including: Louise Page (soprano), Elaine Loebenstein (piano), Chris Latham (violin), Peter Smith (baritone), Jarrad West (tenor), Jude Kohn (vocalist), Robyn Archer (vocalist) , Peter J Casey (vocalist), David Atfield (actor), Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire (vocal ensemble), with special contributions from Andrew Barr, Miriam Margolyes, Michael Kirby, Patrick White, Dorothy Porter and Timothy Conigrave.

Fruitful Love is an event produced by Ben O'Reilly, who is also a member of the DEFGLIS network.
