Annual general meeting marks end of an era

DEFGLIS members recently met in Canberra to farewell the retiring president and members of the board, appoint new board members and enhance the association's constitution.

At the association's annual general meeting, outgoing DEFGLIS President Vince Chong thanked retiring board members Rob Brown, Catherine Humphries, Jay Crutch, Joe Monteith and Bryce Attwood for their service and contributions during his report on the association's in-year achievements.

Key highlights of 2018 included policy development seeking to improve support LGBTI members and their families, significant membership growth and continuing delivery of communications, education, online support and networking services.

"Over the past year, the association has continued to consolidate and grow, building on previous years through the innovation and dedication of our volunteers, with activities such as Military Pride Ball and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras enshrined as an annual feature gathering together this vibrant community," said Chong.

"I provide the strongest endorsement of the talented members who have been elected to drive forward innovation and inclusion for our association."

Karen Dwyer, Luke Headley and Connor Haas were appointed as Board Directors after winning the support of the membership base during elections which were held in the weeks leading up to the meeting.

New directors expressed their excitement to steer the future of the association and thanked members for their support.

A special resolution amendment was passed that will improve board governance, adjusting the term lengths of office-bearers to enshrine renewal and agility into the association were reflection of the board’s desire to improve and evolve to enhance the delivery of support to members.

Vice President Nathan White thanked the outgoing President for leading the association for the past six years and outlined plans for the future direction of the association.

"You have transformed our collective energy from a news service, into a highly capable not-for-profit association that delivers real action to support, strengthen and educate Defence." said White.

"The association has never been in a better position to meet the challenges of the future, and will capitalise on the opportunities to grow and the substantial interest in candidates seeking election to the board this year.

"I look forward to working with the talented new faces to continue our great work and to expand our service delivery.”

The structure of the board including office-bearer appointments will be announced early in 2019.
