National Mental Health Commission launched

The Gay News Network reports that Australia's first Mental Health Commission was officially launched in Sydney this week.

The Commission will put Australia's mental health services under the spotlight and is part of the Federal Government's $2.2 billion mental health reform package.

The rates of attempted suicide within the LGBTI community, particularly among youth could be between three to 14 times higher than the rest of the general population.

The launch coincides with the appointment of Kate Carnell as the new CEO of beyond blue, which has been under heavy criticism over the past few months for inadequate support for LGBTI-related mental health concerns and the views of Chairman Jeff Kennett who claimed it was in the best interest of children to have a "stable, loving environment in which a male and female are married to each other."
