Survival Guide — LGBTI Inclusive Language

LGBTI – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex – but never say it in full. Alternatively say:
Diverse sexual orientation and gender

Sexual Orientation

Sexual Orientation – not sexual preference – sexual attraction is not a lifestyle choice. Your brain chemistry drives an instinctive response telling you what you do and do not find attractive.

Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people. Alternatively say: Same-sex attracted people.

Partner instead of wife, husband or spouse.

Genders

Transgender not transsexual - an umbrella term for people who have a diverse gender experiences. Some transgender people transition gender to realign their body and expression to match their gender identity in order to relieve distress.

Gender identity is a person’s sense of gender (formed by the brain during early childhood)

Gender expression refers to the range of traits, external appearance and behaviours that society stereotypically associate with a gender.

Gender dysphoria is the distress a person experiences as a result misalignment in their physical body and their gender identity.

Cis-person (or cis-male, cis-female) refers to a person who has their gender identity aligned with their birth sex/anatomy.

Sexes

Sex is the biological anatomy of a person: female, intersex or male.

Intersex refers to people who are born with an anatomy that is not completely male or completely female. Intersex people may have body organs or systems from male or female sexes.
