Research to highlight contribution of LGBTI service personnel

2014-05-08-AustraliaPatchDEFGLIS has commenced a research project with leading academics to highlight the contributions made by LGBTI people who have served in Australia's Army, Navy and Air Force.

DEFGLIS has partnered with researchers from the Australian Catholic University, University of Melbourne and Macquarie University.

We're very excited about re-connecting with David Mitchell, the founder of G-Force - the first LGBTI support organisation in Defence. Some of the material he has provided gives us a glimpse at the institutional bias and abuse that occurred in the years following the removal of the policy on homosexual behaviour. We're looking forward to getting his insight about the challenges of providing LGBTI support within a much tougher culture.

We hope that this project will piece back together important contributions that LGBTI people have made to the Defence of Australia. We want to complete the project by 2017 - the 25th anniversary of the open service in the ADF.

At this stage, only non-Defence members are able to participate in this research. The research team has approached Defence to seek ethics approval to conduct this important research. You can use the link below to get in touch with the research team.
