On the record - Vince Chong

DEFGLIS has been misquoted in an article by Heath Aston "'No interest' comments comes back to haunt new Defence Minister Kevin Andrews" published on smh.com.au on 22 Dec 2014.

I have been misquoted as warning the new Minister about derailing the "Pathway to Change" program. As you would know, DEFGLIS and I do not operate in this manner.

DEFGLIS warmly welcomes Kevin Andrews to the role and looks forward to working with him as cultural reform progresses in the Australian Defence Force.

We strongly support the Department's well established five-year "Pathway to Change" program, and the evolution of Defence culture to be more inclusive and respectful of diversity within its workforce.

Personnel who can be authentic about themselves, and be safe and valued at work, contribute to stronger teams, and ultimately greater Defence capability.

DEFGLIS will continue to work within the parameters set by the Department of Defence and government to provide support services to LGBTI personnel and their families.

The Department of Defence is pursuing the creation of internal LGBTI employee support network, which DEFGLIS will support and compliment.

The efforts of the Department to date have been extremely encouraging and positive and I look forward to sharing these developments with you over the coming months.

EDIT: After I was misquoted, these are the comments I sent back to the journalist to seek correction to the record.

G'day Heath,

As discussed, I have no concerns about the incoming Defence minister or wishes for what the Defence minister will do in his new role. I am definitely not issuing any warnings. I don't think our position is relevant to your article's premise, however, if you still want to run with it, I'm summarised it below:

DEFGLIS will work with the government of the day and whomever is the Minister for Defence. I warmly welcome Kevin Andrews to his new role. I note that personnel policy is actually the responsibility of the Assistant Minister Stuart Robert.

I do not have concerns about the new Minister's past comments. I look forward to working with him as cultural reform progresses in the Australian Defence Force.

The DEFGLIS board and I strongly support the Department's well established five-year "Pathway to Change" program, and the evolution of Defence culture to be more inclusive and respectful of diversity within its workforce.

Personnel who can be authentic about themselves, and be safe and valued at work, contribute to stronger teams, and ultimately greater Defence capability.

The Department's progress to improve culture to date has been most encouraging.
