Diversity Strategy Under Development

Board members Stuart O'Brien and Vince Chong attended a planning workshop yesterday along with other diversity practitioners within Defence to provide LGBTI input towards Defence's future diversity strategy.

The strategy seeks to establish a framework against which all future and existing diversity initiatives can be harmonised.  DEFGLIS supports this initiative because mono-culture within Defence presents a vulnerability to the future workforce.  The best and the brightest from society come from a diverse population, and have attributes and different ways of thinking that strengthen and enhance war fighting capability.

Some of the goals DEFGLIS, which include Defence instructors with a high level of awareness about LGBTI people and their needs, increased general awareness within Defence about LGBTI people, protection and support for LGBTI questioning youth, increased networking and support for transgender people and a network of ambassadors capable of providing peer-support and advice to command, were considered alongside the needs of other diverse people.  Importantly, no diverse group was seen or discussed to be more important than any other group.

DEFGLIS anticipates that subject matter experts will be included in consultation once the strategy is drafted. If you are interested in participating in such consultation, please send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
