Board member Karen Dwyer speaks about role models, authenticity and trust on Lesbian Visibility Day.

I’ve never really warmed to the term ‘lesbian,’ but that doesn’t make Lesbian Visibility Day any less significant for me.

I’m ashamed to admit that I once scoffed at the notion of such a day. Another diversity day? Just add it to the list. I don’t need a day for being a lesbian. 'Newsflash Karen - the day is not about you', I thought.

Well it is, and it isn’t.

DEFGLIS Board member Karen Dwyer reflects on her connection to ANZAC Day

I've been in the Navy for more than 12 years and over those years, my understanding and connection to the stories of Anzac has really evolved. No matter where I am in the world, there’s always a moment for quiet reflection on Anzac Day.

National DEFGLIS Rainbow Wreath services create transgenerational conversations on Anzac Day

Anzac Day is an important day for all Australians, where we celebrate the bravery and courage demonstrated during wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. It is a day to celebrate our shared values that were forged on the battlefield and make us proud of who we are.

For over eight years, transgender people have served openly in a range of operational roles in the Navy, Army and Air Force. DEFGLIS President Nathan White said that transgender members enhance military capability and make a significant contribution to the national security.

“We promote inclusion as the foundation of a diverse and capable workforce that is free from discrimination,” said White.

“Highly performing military teams need to draw ideas from a wide range of perspectives to make us strong and more capable to fight and win on the battlefield, in all domains.”
