Military Pride Ball — celebrating 25 years of open service

2017 09 29 PrideBallRecord

DEFGLIS is a non-partisan volunteer charity that supports current LGBTI members and veterans of the Australian Defence Force and their families.

False claims have circulated about this event and our association — here are the facts.

DEFGLIS has not campaigned in the marriage law postal survey.

The theme of the Military Pride Ball was celebrating 25 years of open service. DEFGLIS marked this important milestone to recognise the progress that Defence has made, and acknowledge that open service was on the right side of history. The Military Pride Ball is an annual event that was advertised in early July.

As a mixed association of active-duty and ex-service personnel, veterans, and their civilian families, DEFGLIS has always fully supported removal of unfair discrimination in publicly-funded services and legislation, including marriage law. Doing otherwise would betray the values Defence has instilled in us to uphold.

As a representative body, DEFGLIS was invited by the Senate Legislative and Constitutional Affairs Committee to testify about discrimination experienced by LGBTI Defence personnel their families in 2012. This is normal consultation conducted by the government.

In our early years, DEFGLIS was primarily an information service, providing LGBTI news to personnel and families who were often away from their communities. At the time, marriage from a LGBTI perspective was not covered by mainstream media. Our newsletter filled this gap.

DEFGLIS has since reprioritised its volunteers to where they can do the most good — providing support and education, improving policy, and sharing the lived experiences of our members.

A civilian spokesperson is available to speak to journalists.
